The Torah Scroll is one of
the most prized possessions of the Jew. It commands great
respect and reverence and is afforded a degree of kedushah
(sanctity) not matched by any other ritual object. It symbolizes
the uniqueness of our religious values and the sense of our
culture. Ten Jews and a Torah Scroll comprise an integral
Jewish community, being an indispensable prerogative for its
existence.
To become a congregation a group of observant
Jews will need a scroll of Torah; reciprocally, Torah needs
Jews who corroborate its presence in the world by writing
it, reading it and learning from it.
Torah Scroll provides a Jew with the holiness,
which transforms him into a communal being. Read throughout
the Jewish world from a parchment scroll, Torah Scroll is
a unifying factor of the Jewish nation. Being read and heard
by people of all ages it transmits Judaism from generation
to generation.
The Torah is, in effect, the constitution
of the Jewish people.
